When Moses was preparing the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, he gave them this counsel:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” – Deuteronomy 6:5-9
Moses knew that Israelite children needed consistent, daily training to mature into adults who would remain faithful to God. The same is true today, especially in a culture that challenges young people to reject even the most basic truths about the reality of God and the nature and purpose of humankind. Without consistent, daily training in God’s truth, today’s children are just as likely as the Israelites were to embrace wrong ideas that would prevent them from experiencing God’s love and salvation. They will be tempted to believe lies that will sabotage their ability to experience God’s beautiful design for marriage, the family, and holy, abundant living. As a result, our beloved children will likely experience great suffering and bequeath the same to their children.
